12 Steps to ICD-10 Compliance

Today I read that the AMA has a 12 Step Transition Plan for helping providers transition to ICD-10. The AMA’s 12 Step Transition Plan and a tweet directed to me by Barbara Duck (aka MedicalQuack) inspired me to offer up my own 12 Step plan.

With all due respect to Bill W. and Dr. Bob, here’s my plan:

12 Steps to ICD-10 Compliance

1. We admitted we were powerless over government mandates - that in our current state we were not progressing toward compliance.

2. Came to believe that a conversion to ICD-10 could restore us to compliance.

3. Made a decision to turn our systems and software over to the care of a competent vendor as we understood one to be.

4. Made a searching and fearless detailed inventory of all our impacted systems, processes and software.

5. Admitted to the AMA, to ourselves, and to everyone on Twitter that we had decided to move toward compliance.

6. Were entirely ready to follow a plan to remove all defects from our converted applications.

7. Humbly asked for help when we were not capable of addressing any of our remediation plan shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all artifacts requiring conversion and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such software wherever possible, except when to do so would harm other software or processes.

10. Continued to take inventory, and when we found additional impacted items, promptly corrected them.

11. Sought through inspection and consultation to improve our current processes as we understood them, aiming only for improvement and the power to carry that out.

12. Having achieved compliance as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other out of compliance organizations, and to share our ideas in all our affairs.

So if any aspect of the AMA’s 12 Step Action Plan is not fully addressing your ICD-10 compliance needs, consider following the 12 Step plan I've provided above!
